Doha, Qatar – 21 February, 2010: “It’s all about being green!” reads one of the slogans at The Pearl – Qatar Environment Day. The Pearl – Qatar takes environment protection very seriously as it celebrated its own first Environment Day last Saturday involving residents, visitors and mainly Education City university students participating in the day’s activities.
As owners and master developers of The Pearl-Qatar, United Development Company has long had its own dedicated Environmental Affairs Department, recently rewarded for the ‘Qatar Today Green Organization Award’.
The Pearl-Qatar Environment Day sponsored by Alfardan Group, invited University students to take part in a range of educational activities to raise awareness of the environmental management at The Pearl – Qatar as well as introduce hints and tips for students to play an active role in preserving their environment, including better practices for energy and water conservation. The program for the day included a presentation from UDC Environment Department, about the measures UDC is adopting and the impact they have had on the environment and marine life, followed by an environmental Rally Paper contest along the Boardwalk of Porto Arabia and concluded with an award ceremony for the winning teams.
Aisha Alfardan, Vice President of Alfardan Group distributed prizes to winner Safiulla Taye as well as 1st runner-up team: Shahab Usmari, Rana Saleh and 2nd runner-up team: Safeya Al-Musheeri, Carmen Inkspen.
Aisha Alfardan expressed her enthusiasm about supporting such youth-engaging events that raise awareness on better environmental practices. She praised The Pearl – Qatar and the UDC Environment Department for their initiatives which she says could become a model for other urban developments and households to adopt.
Kate Fletcher, UDC’s Environment Awareness Specialist said: “We are pleased to have the opportunity today to demonstrate what we are doing on the Island to protect the environment. We recognize environment protection as a corporate responsibility that we assume towards future generations to adopt better practices in preventing today’s wastage from becoming tomorrow’s shortage.”
“At UDC we know that the success of every activity we undertake relies upon a responsible stewardship of the resources it consumes, both in construction and operation, as well as the proper management of the materials it consigns back to the environment as waste. In this respect, for example, The Pearl - Qatar boasts an innovative and advanced concept ‘ENVAC’, a garbage disposal system, which will suck waste from homes and commercial establishments on the Island through tubes, to be dealt with at a central plant.”
In concurrence with The Pearl – Qatar’s Environment Day, a photo gallery of the Island’s fauna and flora, dust monitoring activities, recycle bins, as well as other images depicting protection of the environment will be on display for the next two weeks on the Boardwalk for visitors to view.
